App Annie has released a “2015 Retrospective,” which offers an array of data on app downloads, revenues and distribution. Drawn from its global analytics database, the report says that Google Play exceeded the the App Store in terms of downloads in 2015, though Apple still generates more revenue than Google Play.

App Store revenues have continued to grow despite flat download numbers, according to App Annie. However in China, App Store download growth has surpassed the US. More revenue is still being generated in the US and Japan however.

Below are charts comparing apps with the most downloads to those that have generated the most revenue. Interestingly the only app on both lists is Skype. Here revenues doesn’t refer to ad revenues but to in-app purchases or subscription payments. Accordingly it makes sense that these lists would be quite distinct.

It’s also interesting to compare the most active apps among iPhone and Android users. The two lists share the four Facebook apps and Twitter in common. Curiously none of the pre-installed Google apps (e.g., Mail, YouTube, Search) appear on the Android active users list. It may be that App Annie doesn’t have visibility into their usage.
