The July smartphone numbers are out this afternoon from comScore. According to the measurement firm smartphone penetration has reached 77 percent in the US market. While there are some modest shifts in share (i.e., Android slightly down) the relative positions of Apple, Google and Microsoft’s operating systems are mostly unchanged from last month.

Below are tables showing (on the left) operating system share and (on the right) the top 15 smartphone apps by audience reach. This list has been fairly stable over time.

Compared with last month the noteworthy development is that Facebook Messenger has moved up from position three and displaced YouTube as the second most popular app to Facebook’s perennial number one. Apple Music has replaced iTunes Radio (mostly a renaming).

Earlier this week App Annie released its list of the “most downloaded” and “top grossing” iOS apps of all time. It’s interesting to compare the two lists, which use different lenses to rank apps. Nonetheless there’s a fair amount of overlap.
